Evgeny Tomashevsky is a 23 year old Russian chess Grandmaster born on July 1, 1987. With a FIDE rating of 2708, he is no. 27 on the November 2009 FIDE world rating list.

Tomashevsky first distinguished himself in his youth as a representative of the hotbed of Russia’s budding talents, when he won many medals in his own country, in Europe and in other places. Among his outstanding achievements are the Russian Championship and the U-10 EU Championship bronze medal in 1997. He won the U-18 Russian Championship in 2001 at the age of 13, and stood second at the U-18 World Junior Championship.

In March 2009, Tomashevsky pulled off a master stroke by becoming the youngest European individual Champion in Budva, Montenegro, when after eleven games he finished even with ten other first class players. Nerves of steel enabled Evgeny to force the outcome in the tie breaks to bring the crown home, a brilliant success that made him a member of the national team. He went on to become European team vice champion in 2009 with Russia, and performed even better in January 2010 when he won the World team championship in Turkey.

Tomashevsky’s team mates have nicknamed him “The Professor” because of his appearance and glasses, his keen interest in philosophy and his father’s title – a professor-engineer. Besides playing professional chess, Tomashevsky is an Economic and Social Science student at the University of Saratov.

An International Master at 14 and a Grandmaster at 18, the young Tomashevsky often wins with White although he shows equal solidity with Black.
