In 2000,Kramnik became the first player to feature in World Championship match without qualifying for it. Kramnik got the chance only because, Alexei Shirov who defeated him in the candidates match, was not able to find sponsorship. In the championship match, he convincingly defeated Kasparov 8.5-6.5, and he did not lose any game. Kramnik faced Deep Fritz a chess computer in a match spanned over eight games at Bahrain. He tied the match with the computer, which is a nice achievement. As kramnik retained the world championship after tying the match 7-7 in 2004,he had to share the prize money of one million Swiss Francs. Kramnik did not participate in the 2005 FIDA world chess championship. He later negotiated to play a reunification match with the 2005 FIDE world chess champion Topalov. There was controversy-involving Kramnik, which led to Topalov forfeiting fifth game. The allegation was that Kramnik used computer assistance in private bathroom during games. However, FIDE refuted the allegation. The match ended 6-6.In the rapid tie- breaker, Kramnic beat Topalov 2.5 to 1.5.Surely it was a much maligned championship victory for Kramnik. In the 2007 FIDE World chess championship, Kramnik ended up sharing the second spot behind Viswanathan Anand. In 2008,Kramnik challenged Viswanathan Anand for a rematch. However, kramnik lost the match to Anand with 4.5 to 6.5 points. Kramnik lost three games in that match. In 2006,Kramnik again faced Deep Fritz in a match involving six games. However, computer defeated Kramnik by a score line of 4-2.
