Vladimir Malakhov, born on November 27, 1980, is an International Chess Grandmaster from Russia.

Vladimir’s first brush with fame happened in 1993 when he won the Under 14 World Championship. After this, he has gone on improving his Elo rating and reached the prized 2700 mark in April, 2004 and once again in April last year.

Vladimir’s greatest successes till now have been in the World and European Championships; he was placed 2nd in the 4th IECC in 2003 as well as in the 10th European Individual Championship last year.

In the FIDE (or World Chess Federation) Championships in 2000 and 2004, Vladimir Malakhov reached the 2nd round. He was more successful in the next cycle of FIDE where his 11th place in the FIDE World Cup of 2005 got him a berth among the 2006 candidates, when the top rated seeds Vladimir Kramnik and Garry Kasparov refused to participate. However, he got eliminated from this cycle when he lost his 1st match as Candidate to Alexander Grischuk. In the World Cup of 2009, Vladimir eliminated Wesley So, Peter Svidler and Pavel Eljanov and reached the semi finals, but was defeated in the rapid tiebreaks by Ruslan Ponomariov.

Vladimir Malakhov is a Physicist by profession.

His peak rating is 2732 in July 2010 and he is No. 17 in the FIDE World Rankings of July 2010.
