Gabriel Sargissian, age 27, is an Armenian International Chess Grandmaster (2002) who was born on 3rd February, 1983 in Yerevan, Armenia. His FIDE ranking is 51 on November 2009, and Peak rating is 2678 on September 2009.

Sargissian started playing chess from the age of six when his grandfather taught him the game. He made steady progress from then. He won the World Youth Chess Championship under-14 in 1996 and the European Championship under-16 in 1998. He won the Armenian Chess Championship in 2000 and 2003.

He has the reputation of being a hard worker before and during the games, as borne out in his latest results. He shared first both at the strong Reykjavik Open with 7/9 and got the same score in Dubai. In 2006, he became the hero of the Gold winning Armenian team at the Turin Olympiad; his impressive 10/13 included an important win versus Morozevich which was pivotal in the team’s victory.

In 2007, Sargissian won the Ruy Lopez Festival in Zafra, Spain, with 6.5/7, a point and half above the rest including super players such as I Sokolov, Ponomariov and Sasikiran.

In December 2009, Sargissian was awarded the title “Honoured Master of Sport of the Republic of Armenia.”
