Loek Van Wely – The Computer Winner

Loek van Wely, age 37, is a Dutch chess Grandmaster (1993) born on 7th October, 1972 at Heesch, Netherlands. His FIDE ranking is 83 on November 2009, and his Peak rating is 2714 as on October 2001.

Van Wely became Dutch champion 6 times from 2000 to 2005. In 2001, he was considered to be among the world’s Top 10 players.

Van Wely played against Rebel, the computer program, in a 4 game match in 2002; both he and the computer won two games each. Van Wely lead a Dutch team in 2005 and won in the European Team Championships held in Gothenburg.

Van Wely participates frequently in the prestigious Corus Chess tournaments and as of 2010, he has participated in it nineteen years in a row.

Van Wely won the fourteenth Chicago Open in May 2010.
